A photo of one of our Firefighters Hayley was seen across the world as she worked with over 100 of her fellow Firefighters to extinguish the large gorse fire in the Mournes between Friday 23 April and Sunday 25 April.
Hayley is an On-Call Firefighter in Kilkeel Fire Station. Being On-Call means she has another job but whenever her community needs her she responds to incidents, rescuing people and extinguishing fires. All our On-Call Firefighters are well trained to make sure they can protect their community. Hayley wants to inspire young women and girls to become Firefighters, speaking to the BBC she said
“I like the idea of inspiring younger girls to go for the job. When I was growing up it wasn’t really a thing for women to be in these sort of jobs. I want little girls to think ‘I can do that’. If you put your mind to it you can do anything you want”
She recorded a short video to thank everyone for the amazing support we received from our community during the incident on behalf of all her colleagues involved in extinguishing the fire.
