Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service

Cross Border Co-Operation

NIFRS has a Service Level Agreement with Donegal Fire Service by which NIFRS provides first response to calls in Donegal in the border areas of Londonderry, Strabane & Belleek.
NIFRS & Donegal Fire Service regularly participate in joint exercises & familiarisation visits, as well as the sharing of best practices.

Joint fire safety initiatives are an important part of cross-border co-operation, & as part of the North South Fire Safety Week (2-9 October 2006), NIFRS Firefighters from Enniskillen District joined with their counterparts in Co Cavan & Co Leitrim to help spread the message on fire safety in the home.

Enniskillen District firefighters visited local schools, speaking to around 750 children aged 11-16 years old, & carried out a number of demonstrations at Tesco in Carrick on Shannon where they used the Chip Pan Unit to show the effect of water on chip pan fires.

Leaflets were also issued & it is estimated that firefighters spoke with almost 600 people during the event.

Enniskillen District continued its programme of cross-border co-operation on 13 November 2006, when firefighters from Monaghan Town Fire Station visited Clogher Fire Station. The visit involved a demonstration of the Red Cross Fire Emergency Support Vehicle, which provides assistance to householders in the immediate aftermath of a fire in their home. Enniskillen District Station Commander Robbie Bryson commented, “Visits such as these provide firefighters with the opportunity to compare techniques & equipment, & share their skills & knowledge. This is of great benefit when attending cross border incidents”.
