Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service

Mass Decontamination

The New Dimension project in the wider UK FRS commenced work in the aftermath of the tragic events of September 11 2001 by evaluating fire and rescue service capabilities and resilience for dealing with catastrophic, chemical, radiological, nuclear, biological incidents. Such incidents may require the mass decontamination of large numbers of people.

As part of the NIFRS Decontamination capability a Mass Decontamination Response Module is based at Newry Fire Station. The module is capable of decontaminating both members of the public and firefighters, and is crewed by both full-time and part-time on-call firefighters based at Newry supported by colleagues at Rathfriland and Warrenpoint Stations who have also been trained in its operation
