How long have you worked with Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service?
I have worked for NIFRS for 19 years.
What skills/qualifications are needed to do your job?
Good IT skills, communication, interpersonal and numeracy skills together with a good sense of humour and a lot of common sense.
Outline what a typical working day is like for you?
My day at Northern Area Headquarters always begins with a “Good Morning” this sets the mood for the rest of the day.
After establishing who is on duty that day, Officer availability and checking e-mails the work begins.
On a daily basis I carry out a wide range of administrative tasks working alongside the Area Management Team, District Staff and the Community Development Department.
Main duties are linked to Operations, Personnel or Finance with me being renowned for my scrupulous attention to detail in relation to Finance.
No two days at Northern Area are ever the same, which makes it very interesting, with work being very much determined by Area Projects ongoing at any one time.
What do you enjoy most about working for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service?
Apart from the job satisfaction gained from my own role what I most enjoy about working for NIFRS is the team spirit amongst staff, with both uniformed and non-uniformed personnel working together in partnership to achieve the objectives of the organisation.
How do you unwind off duty?
When I am not working I enjoy keeping fit, either going to the gym, swimming with the kids or more recently I have taken up running. With a lot of encouragement and support this has become quite addictive and along with other personnel from Northern Area we took part in the Belfast City Marathon this year raising money for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children – NIFRS corporate charity for 2008.
