How long have you worked for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service?
I have been with NIFRS since I joined as a Firefighter in February 1993.
What roles have you held during your career with Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service?
I joined NIFRS 15 years ago as a Firefighter and was delighted to be promoted to Crew Commander in 2002.
How do you unwind off duty?
I do find it easy to unwind when not on duty. I am both a Retained Firefighter for NIFRS and a Firefighter at George Best Belfast City Airport; both these jobs keep me very busy and so when not on duty I enjoy spending time at home with my family. My Retained colleagues are my friends away from work also.
Besides attending emergency calls what other duties does a Retained Firefighter have?
As a Crew Commander my job involves preparing training at our weekly drill night and organising other training courses for the rest of the Crew. Our Station has also been taking part in rescue competitions and road traffic collision extrication challenges so we spend evenings in the Station working on our skills and improving our rescue technique.
I support the Station Watch Commander with our Fire Safety activity as we carry out Free Home Fire Safety Checks and organise Fire Safety leaflet drops around the local community.
The personnel of Carnlough Fire Station help support a lot of charities and we do lots of fundraisers throughout the year. In 2008 our Station was heavily involved in fundraising for NIFRS Corporate Charity “NI Cancer Fund for Children” and we were presented with an award of appreciation by the charity for our contribution to the fundraising success. We also like to support many local causes and charities through our annual raft race, car washes etc.
What do you enjoy most about working for Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service?
I enjoy working with the Carnlough Crew as everyone enjoys the job and we all have the same goal and that is to provide the best possible fire and rescue service to the Community in which we serve.
I also enjoy working with the team at Northern Area Headquarters, Ballymena District and Ballymena Fire Safety in responding to emergency calls and promoting fire safety messages to the public.
